Introduction to Meitei Mayek

Meitei Mayek (also spelled Meetei Mayek) is the indigenous writing system of the Manipuri language (Meiteilon), an official language of the state of Manipur, India, and one of the 22 scheduled languages of the Republic of India.

For centuries, this unique Brahmic-influenced yet highly distinct script was used by royal scribes, chroniclers, and scholars to document the genealogy, philosophy, astronomy, medicine, and folklore of the Meitei civilization in traditional manuscripts known as Puyas (ꯄꯨꯌꯥ).

Ancient Origins and Anatomy-Based Letters

Unlike many contemporary scripts whose alphabetic forms are purely abstract geometric shapes, the Meitei Mayek alphabet has a deeply philosophical and anatomical origin. Each of the primary 27 letters (Iyek Ipee) is named after and inspired by a specific part of the human body:

  • ꯀ (Kok): Head
  • ꯁ (Sam): Hair
  • ꯂ (Lai): Forehead
  • ꯃ (Mit): Eye
  • ꯄ (Pa): Eyelash / Lip
  • ꯅ (Na): Ear
  • This anatomical naming convention reflects the ancient Meitei worldview that language and written expression are living, breathing extensions of the human vessel.

The Historical Shift: The 18th Century and Puya Meithaba

During the 18th century, during the reign of King Pamheiba (Garibniwaz) and the widespread adoption of Gaudiya Vaishnavism in the valley of Manipur, the official script of the kingdom began a dramatic transformation.

Historical accounts recount the Puya Meithaba (the burning of ancient manuscripts), following which the Bengali-Assamese script was officially adopted for administrative, religious, and educational texts. For nearly three centuries, the rich literary traditions of Meiteilon were written almost exclusively using Bengali script (Bangla Mayek).

    The 20th-Century Revival Movement

Despite centuries of marginalization, indigenous scholars (Maichous) and cultural revivalists preserved knowledge of the script within sacred circles. In the mid-20th century, a mass movement arose across Manipur to reclaim the ancestral script:

  • Formation of MEELAL (Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup): Grassroots organizations formed to standardize the alphabet and petition the government for educational reintroduction.
  • The 1980 Expert Committee Consensus: The Government of Manipur constituted a high-level committee consisting of linguists, historians, and scholars who officially standardized the 27-letter core alphabet, along with 8 final consonants (Lonsum), vowel diacritics (Chejap), and the numeral system.
  • Phased Reintroduction in Schools: Starting in the early 2000s, the Government of Manipur introduced Meitei Mayek in primary schools class-by-class.

  • Official Gazette & Complete Modern Transition

In 2021, the Government of Manipur took the historic step to transition all official notifications, textbooks, and legislative materials to Meitei Mayek. Today, high school board examinations and university courses in Manipur are conducted using the script.
